Dyneema is the DSM brand name for a modern fibre called UHMWPE, a high-tenacity type of polyethylene. It has extremely high tensile strength – about twice that of nylon, and a lower specific gravity than water (it floats).

Negative properties in a climbing context are that it has extremely low elongation and a low melting point (about 150 C).

It it difficult to dye and so is usually white or a dull grey. The colour in Dyneema products generally comes from nylon yarns that are woven in with it to improve the integrity of the weave.
