Spectra webbing is the preferred material for manufacturing lightweight sewn slings for rock climbing and mountaineering. We stock it in the 15 mm width, which is durable and facilitates sewing.
- Lightweight and very strong
- Webbing imported from the USA, sewn in New Zealand
- Complies with EN 566
- Colours may vary in availability - usually green, yellow, orange, and black
- Minimum strength 22kN
Spectra is the Honeywell brand name for a modern fibre called UHMWPE, a high-tenacity type of polyethylene. It has extremely high tensile strength - about twice that of nylon, and a lower specific gravity than water (it floats).
Negative properties in a climbing context are that it has extremely low elongation and a low melting point (about 150 C).
It it difficult to dye and so is usually white or a dull grey. The colour in spectra products generally comes from nylon yarns that are woven in with it to improve the integrity of the weave.
