Aspiring Enterprises is the New Zealand agent for Climbing Technology , an innovative UK-based company which supplies an expanding range of karabiners and other products. CT karabiners are well-made, good quality karabiners at favourable prices. For the money, these are remarkably good products.
We also supply karabiners from International Safety Components, a long-established company in North Wales which has in the last few years re-focussed on climbing and safety equipment, producing innovative products to high standards.
There are three standard gate-locking systems in common use, and we carry a selection of all three. The standard, traditional locking system is the screw-lock, with a small sleeve which is screwed up about four turns to fully open or close the sleeve and lock the gate. These are safe if they remain correctly screwed up, but can work loose, and it is easy to forget to fasten the screw sleeve.
An alternative is the twist-lock, in which a sleeve is twisted to open the gate, but is spring-loaded and closes automatically. These karabiners can be opened quickly and easily with one hand, yet lock automatically when released. Twist-locks are very easy to work with, but the gate can sometimes be twisted open by various objects. They should not be used on figure-8 descenders for this reason, but generally are safe on anchors.
A more recent development, the triple-lock, is based on the twist-lock but has an extra notch, requiring the sleeve to moved upward before it can be twisted to open. This is much safer than the twist-lock be belaying and abseiling, but there are certain situations in which they can be opened unintentionally. No system is completely fool-proof, and vigilance is always necessary.
In D-shape karabiners we have both screwlock and twistlock karabiners available with a captive pin so that the karabiner can be fitted in position for use on cowstails and lanyards (see Webbing Products).
The HMS pear shape is specifically designed for belay knots such as the Italian Hitch (Munter Hitch). Due to the HMS wide base, the karabiner might be loaded at a distance from its back, transferring excessive load to its weaker gate side. For this reason the pear shape is not recommended for general use.
Pear shape karabiners are also excellent for belaying with belay plates, because the uniformity of the wide end of the karabiner minimises twisting of the rope, especially when belaying with double ropes. Also, the wideness of the karabiner makes it easy to connect, and the absence of parallel sides makes cross-loading of the karabiner less likely.
Karabiner use and care is covered in more detail at the Equipment Inspection page.

The Gecko karabiners are the larger of the the two and are general purpose locking karabiners, which we stock in the screw-lock and twist-lock versions. The Gator screw-lock is a very small karabiner, which must be one of the lightest and nicest karabiners around.

Snaplink karabiners are mainly used by climbers when clipping protection. Snaplink shape and gate action are vital to climbing efficiently. We have chosen a range of snaplink karabiners that were designed with this in mind. Our Climbing Technology snaplinks are excellent for sport climbing both indoors and outdoors, where lightness and quick clipping are crucial factors.
CT PlaingateThe Climbing Technology plaingate snaplink is an offset-D shape with a wide base and arched back for wide gate opening and easier clipping. The extremely low weight is an advantage for both sport and alpine routes. |
|
CT BentgateThe Climbing Technology bentgate has a wide base to make rope clipping as easy as possible, and the shape minimizes karabiner rotation on a quickdraw. The bentgate has the smooth action gate necessary for easy clipping. |
Both of the Climbing Technology snaplinks are available in both polished and anodised versions. The anodised options have a green body and black gate.
Our quickdraw set comprises a Climbing Technology plaingate snaplink and CT bent-gate, complete with an Aspiring quickdraw.
There are two different quickdraw sets available. The polished karabiners are available with a standard Aspiring 19mm quickdraw, while the anodised karabiners come with the narrowed quickdraw. Both options are lightweight and stylish quickdraw sets, giving easy clipping at a very affordable price.

Climbing Technology steel karabiners have high strength ratings and are very reasonably priced. We currently carry three models: in the offset-D shape just the screw-lock, and in the wide-opening D shape the screw-lock and the triple-lock.
The standard offset-D screw-lock is suitable for most purposes, but a wide-opening D is used when the karabiner needs to open 20-25 mm at the gate.

In addition we have two ISC stainless steel karabinersof the same design as the standard steel D, with a standard screw-lock closure and a triple-lock. Stainless steel is essential for corrosive environments and is extremely durable.
